As most of us in Coolidge Country would agree, we concur with Tom Selleck’s remarks at the Reagan Library, beginning at 38:21: “I always like quoting Calvin Coolidge,” which he wonderfully rendered on 24 July at the Panel Discussion following the showing of “Revolutionary America.” It is fitting, after all, that Coolidge (being Reagan’s favorite President) makes a long-awaited return to the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California:

If all men are created equal, that is final. If they are endowed with inalienable rights, that is final. If governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, that is final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions. If anyone wishes to deny their truth or soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people.”

As Jeremiah Regan, one of the key writers of the documentary responded, “You know you have the right narrator (Mr. Selleck, of course) when he has a Calvin Coolidge quote prepared.” We could not agree more.
